Heinrich Eschenburg School
An existing primary school, which consists of several construction phases over the last hundred years, was to be expanded due to increasing student numbers and new educational concepts. For this purpose, part of the old building was demolished and a new building was added to the existing building in such a way that a central "marketplace" was created, which is used as a learning, exercise and event space. This central space connects the classrooms of the old building with those of the new building, so that all classrooms are accessible from this location.
The new part of the building was built using wood construction from CLT panels and provided with a cladding facade so that the extension blends harmoniously into the appearance of the existing building. In the interior, the wood building material remains largely visible, and in the central room, trusses are used to span the hall. A glass roof with sun protection glazing is integrated here, creating a bright and friendly space. The facade to the old building was largely opened on one side to allow the old and new buildings to merge.
A photovoltaic system was installed on the roof and the heating system is operated by an air heat pump. The building is naturally ventilated, which is supported by the control of the skylight windows in the central hall and the adjacent classrooms. These windows use the chimney effect of the high windows and air inlets ensure efficient cross ventilation in the classrooms. At the same time as the new building was being built, large parts of the old building were renovated.
