Hafencity Magdeburger Hafen

The new Germany headquarters of Greenpeace, a centre for the design professionals of Hamburg and around 100 high-spec apartments, these were the components of the brief for the project on one of the most attractive sites in the Hamburg Hafencity. The competition team in partnership with Ian Ritchie Architects and the environmental engineers of Max Fordham in London was selected from an applicant's group of 160 participants to provide a design proposal.
The goal was to develop a strategy which fulfils the very high ecological standards for the building as well as corresponds to the extra ordinary town planning situation. The design for the building volume especially in the office parts is based on a very low building depth amongst other things. This allows an optimum exploitation of daylight and therefore a minimisation of required energy.
The appearance of the building, which is wrapped with oxidiesed Corten steel, changes constantly due to individually openable facade elements. The building cover can be completely closed to prevent the loss of warm energy. Along the shore to the water a generous patio and a roofed loggia are integrated for public use.
