Wilhelmsburg-Reiherstieg

The competition site is located in the port of Hamburg, which is constantly re-defined due to changing demands. The specific situation of the site being surrounded by quarters of a largely diverse quality and potential proved to be its most essential benefit to be scrutinised.
This situation allows for a number of excellent options of creating a transitional sphere that succeeds in integrating people and functions that find it basically difficult to root themselves elsewhere.
The design suggests turning the Reiherstiegviertel into a place to house workshops that have lost their original location as a result of the restructuring of the harbour. In order to enhance this process it is envisioned to create a houseboat factory as the centre of the settlement, creating a swimming city with its own infrastructure on the adjacent canal.
The factory is embedded into a public parc, which is surrounded by live and work quarters. Large scale industrial buildings such as silos will be transformed to house another use and remain as landmarks in the urban fabric.
