Domplatz in Hamburg

Domplatz faces significant challenges primarily related to balancing historical preservation with modern development and managing public space. The key issue is the conflict between maintaining the site's archaeological and historical significance and pursuing new construction. Its archaeological sensitivity complicates projects, as disturbing important historical layers necessitates extensive assessments and potential delays. this area is underutilized, suffering from a lack of consistent foot traffic and public engagement, especially at night. This is compounded by the absence of a cohesive vision for its use. Various proposals have been made over the years, but finding a plan that satisfies both preservationists and the need for a functional urban space has been difficult. Additionally, making the space accessible, inviting, and well-maintained for public events remains a challenge. Addressing these issues requires careful planning to integrate preservation with contemporary urban needs. we envision that vacant space to accomodate various type of users, the office workers from the buildings surrounding the plaza, the tourists and regular visitors of shopping street 'Mönkebergstraße', the children who go to the kindergarten attached to the plaza, and the regular passers by who cycle through the city and pass by Domplatz. we also see the need to create zones/ spaces that can accomodate different calendars along the day, even more, along the year. Ensuring that Domplatz is accessible and inviting to all demographics is important, especially that ast efforts have sometimes fallen short in making the space feel welcoming and usable for a diverse population.
